The future of television is online
New Scientist - special issue on Home Entertainment

It has already happened to millions of people in Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, and in the next few years hundreds of millions more across the globe should have the same experience: their TV picture will quite suddenly - and very permanently - disappear. No amount of shouting, bashing the box, or fiddling with the aerial will get the picture back, because after half a century of service, analogue TV broadcasts are being switched off for good.
Most of us, of course, won't notice, having switched to digital TV services such as the UK's Freeview years ago. Analogue TV sets, and the transmitters that have kept them glowing, are giving way to new ones .

MWC 2008: Mobile website population booming
Posted by Maggie Holland at 12:01PM, Wednesday 13th February 2008
The number of mobile websites has shot up by six times the figure reported by dotMobi in November.
This year will undoubtedly be the year of the mobile internet, with the number of mobile websites having grown phenomenally from 25,000 in November last year to around 150,000 today.
So says dotMobi who completed its latest trawl of the web to update its figures just last night and spoke to IT PRO this morning on the penultimate day of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
dotMobi spiders the whole of the internet, using some 200-plus servers to conduct its analysis, the figures from which have helped to confirm that this year will be a momentous one for the mobile web, according to Paul Nerger, vice president of advanced services and applications at dotMobi.

The new reality—the state of the art market in 2009 is not easy to predict

The Outlook for the 2009 Art Market is noy very good. A tremendous amount of money was lost in the Stock Market. People with Art Collections are selling with losses. Signals are reaching us from individual artist, galleries and dealers about a rapidly deteriorating Art market. The traditional fairs and exhibitions in the first month of 2009 until now have been underperforming.
From the financial point of view Art is a luxury. This could become the year of 'the shrinking Art market'.

(This article is an excerpt from The Art Newspaper, click on the link to read the whole article).
The general economy and also the art economy is clearly headed for some choppy waters…” This is what mega-dealer Larry Gagosian told his staff in a tough-talking, if ungrammatical, memo published last November in Flash Art, as the global financial meltdown continued to panic investors, the US recession was officially confirmed and unemployment figures for the country soared by 533,000 in that month alone.

In Miami, the trendy French dealer Emmanuel Perrotin has shuttered his gallery, and now will only reopen it for Art Basel Miami Beach next December. Sotheby’s is also trimming its workforce, and has announced it has abandoned guarantees for the foreseeable future. The firm, and its arch-rival Christie’s, were badly hit by the collapse in art prices during New York’s sales of impressionist, modern and contemporary art in November, which garnered only half the expected totals. Those sales were prepared before the autumn, when art prices were still riding high. Some works sold in November for half their low estimates, and up to 75% of the works in some sales were bought in.
Today a different reality prevails. The lacklustre 2008 autumn fairs, Frieze and Art Basel Miami Beach, saw dealers prepared to be flexible on prices, accepting discounts of up to 30%. But, as journalist, sociologist and lecturer (and The Art Newspaper contributor) András Szántó points out: “Just as designer brands are now being offered at huge discounts in the high street—were those shoes or handbags really worth the previous prices?—so those [pre-financial meltdown] prices should never have been so huge. Some dealers priced art so aggressively, and the prices went up with such velocity, that it is inevitable that they should fall back sharply.”
These prices rose with the greatest speed for contemporary art. But the picture of the art market, as 2009 opens, is far from simple. It is always worth remembering that the market is not a single block, but a whole series of sub-sections.

Consumer Electronics Show
The 2009 International CES, January 8-11, Las Vegas, Nev.

INTERNATIONAL CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW 2009: High tech in low spirit. Organizers optimistic, but data suggest expo's draw will drop.
The last time the International Consumer Electronics Show opened in a recession this deep, pocket calculators, bar codes and rudimentary word processors were cutting-edge technology.
How the current recession -- the worst since 1974, according to some recent national unemployment numbers -- affects the 2009 edition of North America's biggest gadget show remains to be seen.
Indicators to measure the success of CES, which opens Thursday, are mixed.
Organizers at the Consumer Electronics Association say preregistration numbers are similar to 2008 when about 142,000 people attended the event.
The 2009 show also boasts about 300 new exhibitors, including mobile telecommunications giant Verizon Wireless, and CES could get another boost from an announcement that Apple Inc. founder Steve Jobs won't be participating in the competing Macworld show in California.

Las Vegas tech show shrinks
The annual Consumer Electronics Show will likely feel the economic recession, with fewer manufacturers, retailers and people turning up to check out the newest gadgets.
With shoppers in a funk and companies scaling back, the annual Consumer Electronics Show extravaganza in Las Vegas this week is likely to be subdued, with fewer manufacturers, retailers and people expected in attendance.
The focus is likely to be on smaller, more connected and greener devices that can help consumers save on bills. That is a change from years past, when companies trafficked in excess, offering items such as massive 150-inch TVs that were beyond the financial reach of most consumers.

Obamanomics
What Does it Mean?
A buzzword that describes the economic philosophy of 2008 democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Obamanomics calls for lower tax rates for companies that meet certain criteria, such as providing decent healthcare and maintaining a U.S. workforce and headquarters. Obama's economic platform also calls for higher taxes for high-income families and investment in education, healthcare and the sciences.

A knol is an authoritative article about a specific topic. A knol is a unit of knowledge. The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. It's their knol, their voice, their opinion. We expect that there will be multiple knols on the same subject, and we think that is good.
The web contains vast amounts of information, but not everything worth knowing is on the web. An enormous amount of information resides in people's heads: millions of people know useful things and billions more could benefit from that knowledge. Knol will encourage these people to contribute their knowledge online and make it accessible to everyone.
Knols include strong community tools which allow for many modes of interaction between readers and authors. People can submit comments, rate, or write a review of a knol. At the discretion of the author, a knol may include ads from our AdSense program. If an author chooses to include ads, Google will provide the author with a revenue share from the proceeds of those ad placements.

Shine - New website for women - When we started talking about creating a new website for women, we wanted to avoid all of the common categories that advertisers or marketers tend to put us in. We didn’t want to be a site just for moms or just for single women or working women, or any specific demo- or psychographic. We wanted to create a smart, dynamic place for women to gather, get info and to connect with each other and the world around them. The important thing wasn’t how to talk to a 32.5 year-old with 2.2 kids but how to inspire you laugh, think, get mad, empathize, and be surprised and entertained. With Shine, we want to address the commonalities that make us such an amazing group.

High costs tarnish gold
Valentines will be getting fewer karats this year
Plunging stock prices and home values are making consumers feel less wealthy, and robbing some of the passion from luxury shopping.
"We'll sell a lot of diamond rings and pendants, from $59 up to $300 or $400," said Jerry Taylor, an assistant manager at Rich's Jewelry and Pawn Shop in Newark. "But we won't be selling much gold. This is the time for people to sell their gold, not buy it."

2008 Digital Future Report
The Center for the Digital Future at the USC Annenberg School is pleased to present the results of the seventh year of our project, "Surveying the Digital Future."  The seven years of longitudinal research comprise an absolutely unique data base that completely captures broadband at home, the wireless Internet, on-line media, user-generated content and, now, social networking.
This year's report contains a large module looking at on-line communities and social networking in great detail. Readers can compare the social networking data and correlate it to seven years of attitudes and behaviors on-line. As usual, the report continues to track off-line media use, purchasing both off-line and through e-commerce, social and political activity and a wealth of other data.

Dress cool via the chill factor - Classic styles help women stay toasty without sacrificing a professional, presentable appearance.
Karen E. Culp News-Leader
It's coming.
Blustery winds. Single-digit temperatures. Snow, sleet and freezing rain.
Classic styles are back with a vengeance, and the fitted, buttoned-down look of a trench or classic wool pea coat is perfect for the woman who wants to stay toasty but also needs to look professional, presentable and pulled together. More casual coats, such as quilted looks, "puffers" and down-filled styles are also prettier than ever, outfitted with chic details such as special stitching, unique buttons and other little touches.
In fact, those extras are a trend among all coats this year.

Computer club to hold 'nerd auction' for dates
Forget about geeks not getting dates! The Linux Users Group at Washington State University put their clever minds together and came up with the nerd exchange. Ready to date beyond cyberspace, they decided to use their computer smarts to their advantage. In the past, geeks were suckered into fixing computers for beautiful, flirtatious girls, only to be completely ignored by them after they got what they wanted. Not the Linux Users Group.
“You can buy a nerd and he’ll fix your computer, help you with stats homework, or if you’re really adventurous, take you to dinner,” the group president said.
The group is soliciting help from sororities in an attempt to spruce up their image. Unfortunatley, no one has taken the bait and they have yet to put their epic challenge to the test. Hey, props to these guys, even if it never works out, good on them for getting creative.
