Nature's 100 Best Initiative Publishes Preliminary Findings On How to Green May 30, 2008, 3:57pm Commercially-promising advances inventions, innovations and ideas inspired by the natural world and its close to 4-billion year-old history of 'research and development' are at the centre of a new collaborative initiative called Natures 100 Best unveiled at the Ninth Conference of Parties to Convention on Biological Diversity, 19-30 May. The projects and products presented are from an original list over 2,000. A super-small pacemaker modeled on the wiring of the humpback whales heart and pigment-free color coatings from the light-splitting structures of a peacock's feather are among a range of extraordinary new eco-breakthroughs emerging from mimicking nature. The initiative is the brainchild of the Biomimicry Guild and the Zero Emission Research and Initiatives (ZERI) in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Nature's 100 Best List, a mixture of innovations at various stages of commercialization from the drawing board to imminent arrival in the marketplace, is set to be completed by October 2008 in time for the IUCN Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The Nature's 100 Best book will be published in May 2009.

Trade can 'export' CO2 emissions- By Richard Black - Environment Correspondent, BBC News website. - New research from the US shows that trade can significantly affect emissions of greenhouse gases.
Solar energy conversion offers a solution to help mitigate global warming Currently, between 80 percent and 85 percent of our energy comes from fossil fuels. However, fossil fuel resources are of finite extent and are distributed unevenly beneath Earth's surface. When fossil fuel is turned into useful energy through combustion, it often produces environmental pollutants that are harmful to human health and greenhouse gases that threaten the global climate. In contrast, solar resources are widely available and have a benign effect on the environment and climate, making it an appealing alternative energy source.
Carbon Footprint is a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide. How big is yours ? Find out, and then do something about it!
Tech Firms Go Green As E-Waste Mounts This is where computers go to die a green death. Inside Hewlett-Packard Co.'s cavernous recycling plant in the Sacramento suburbs, truckloads of obsolete PCs, servers and printers collected from consumers and businesses nationwide are cracked open by goggled workers who pull out batteries, circuit boards and other potentially hazardous components.
Sustainable Architecture Can Help Reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions By the year 2030, the goal is for new buildings to be "carbon-neutral" and use no energy from fossil fuels that produce greenhouse gases. This means that less than 25 years from now, ideally no oil, coal or natural gas would be burned to build, heat, cool and light new buildings.
The ECOdrive assists in regulating a balanced, responsible, safe and agreeable driving behaviour. Important economic savings and environmental benefits are achieved as a result, without demanding additional effort from driver or owner-company. ECOdrive stimulates good driving behaviour by subtle correction of the driver when he/she is, deliberately or unintended, exceeding the speed limit. The vehicle's speed will automatically be adjusted as ECOdrive reduces the engine revolutions when they exceed a certain pre-set level.
